The body's attempt to maintain physiological homeostasis perioperatively induces a non-specific adaptation response that can be detrimental and lead to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), hyper-metabolism, and hyper-catabolism.
Further injury may cause loss of normally functioning negative-feedback systems leading to muscle wasting, impaired immune function, impaired wound healing, and the potential for organ failure and death.
